Yes, you can use different ringtones for different contacts on your Redmi. For example, use one unique ringtone for your spouse, and another for a close friend.
i. Assigning a different ringtone for a contact
- On your phone, find and launch the Contacts app.
- Tap the contact you want to assign a different ringtone.
- Tap
to select a new ringtone.
ii. Assigning a different ringtone for a contact group
When you assign a custom ringtone to a contact group, all the contacts in this group will have their ringtones changed automatically to the one you’ve assigned for the group.
- On your phone, find and launch the Contacts app.
- Find and tap My groups.
- Select a group.
- Tap the Group ringtone icon
to select a new ringtone.
Note: The steps here were written for MIUI V5, based on Android 4.2.2 on a Redmi (HM1W). If you’re having a different model of Redmi or other version of MIUI/Android, there’s a possibility that the steps and screenshots will be different.

Hi Ethan
I do not see this:
3.Tap redmi select ringtone icon to select a new ringtone.
Ethan says
On your contact detail screen, there should be a Music note icon. Tap it to change the ringtone. If you can’t see it, you’re probably viewing the contacts stored in SIM card.

anyone tried to set individual sms text notification depending on the contact? how please?

I don’t think there’s such an option at this moment. You might want to explore using a 3rd party Messaging app which can do that.

Hi Ethan. I’m trying to set 1 ring tone for all Contacts and another ring tone for numbers that aren’t in my Contacts. This is the way I’m going about doing this:
1. Set the default ring tone under Settings.
2. Then I created a group in my Contacts called “All” and added all 473 of my contacts to it.
3. I then clicked the Ringtone button at the bottom of the screen which leads to the “Select tone” interface, then I click on the “Browse” button below and select the other ring tone I want.
However, this particular change is never implemented, and the default ringtone is still played whenever anyone on my Contacts (and hence also in my “All” group) calls me.
Is this a bug? Is there a way to get around this problem to achieve what I want?
Thanks.
Note: I’ve read this page and your other page (http://webcazine.com/10477/how-to-assign-multiple-contacts-with-the-same-ringtone-on-redmi/) also.

This is what I understood after a few rounds of testing:
When you change the Group ringtone to a new ringtone, the phone actually changes all the contacts in this group to this particular new ringtone. If you get into the individual contacts, you will see their ringtones have been changed to the new ringtone which is similar to the group one.
After you’ve changed the group ringtone, you can randomly go into some of the contacts to verify their ringtones. As long as they’re similar to group ringtone. You get what you want.
The issue comes in when you have a new contact that joins the group after you’ve changed the group ringtone. This contact’s ringtone will still remain as default.
So, it seems like you have no choice but to do the same process of changing the group ringtone again, so that it apply to all the contacts including the new one.
I hope I didn’t confuse you. 🙂
