Have you been wondering why there isn’t an option to save a contact to the phone storage when you’re creating a new contact ?
The reason is simple: That’s because you’ve signed in with your Xiaomi account on your phone.
In my test, I could see the save-to-phone option when I didn’t sign in with my Xiaomi account. I could create as many contacts as I like and have them stored on my Redmi.
But as soon as I signed in with my Xiaomi account, the contacts on my phone auto-synced to Xiaomi contacts and the save-to-phone option disappeared.
So, what if you turn the auto-sync function off ? In that case, the contacts created in Xiaomi account is stored locally on the phone and ready to be sync in future.
Is this how it works on your Redmi ? Let me know in the comments.
Note: The steps here were written for MIUI V5, based on Android 4.2.2 on a Redmi (HM1W). If you’re having a different model of Redmi or other version of MIUI/Android, there’s a possibility that the steps and screenshots will be different.

hai, i have recently bought redmi2 mobile, after inserting sim its showing contacts double times, why? and how can i copy my sim contacts to phone memory? am new to smartphone, dont knw operating much.
Ethan says
You might have accidentally imported your contacts from SIM to your phone storage or Google account (if you’re signed in). Anyway, you can find out the sources of the 2 same contacts by going to their contact Edit screens, and scroll down to the Imported from field.
Refer to this guide on how to transfer contacts from your SIM card to your phone & Google contacts.

Hi,
I wonder why my Redmi note showing “unknown number” while caller’s phone number has been save.
Please help.
Thanks n regards,
Ethan says
I think it’s a bug that the developer has to fix. Read this thread
In the meantime, you can edit the numbers in your Contacts to match exactly what they’re shown on the screen. For example, if the incoming number shows the + sign and country code, you’ll need to include this info in your Contacts.
If you’ve a lot of contacts, you can use the Number Fixer app to help you.

hi i have a redmi 1s recently purchased… have had it for over a month now. all of a sudden the contacts seem to keep disappearing… any idea why… the no. are still present but the names seem to disappear.
Ethan says
Strange, are the names disappearing in the Contacts app, call logs or messaging app ? I haven’t come across this problem. Maybe you go ahead to report this in the MIUI forum.

Sorry Balaram, could log this case in the MIUI forum. By the way, I’m not aware there’s a personal folder in the stock messaging app. Are you using the stock messaging app ?

How to resolve “Discard your Changes? ” issue from RedMi 1S while adding or editing any contacts
Ethan says
I don’t see “Discard your Changes?” as an issue. It’s mainly telling you to exit the contact editing screen without saving.

How to change contacts in Phone memory ‘unsynced in to sync’
Ethan says
As far as I know when you sign in with your Xiaomi account, the phone contacts will sync to Mi Cloud. Here’s what I’ve tested.

I was searching about the same question and came across your article.
I have unchecked contacts sync option in Xiaomi account and hope it would consider as to be saved in phone.

I am on MIUI V5…I really love MIUI ROMS

From my testing, I could only see the Phone option when I signed out my Xiaomi account. As soon as I signed in, the Phone option is no longer available. It seems like to store the contacts on your phone, you can’t sign in your Xioami account. 🙁

Hello Ethan,
Thanks for ur posts and they helped me a lot as I bought my Redmi 1s 1week back.
The prob is when I want to apply theme, it was asked me to sign in to MI cloud(Xioami account) account I created it and signed in. After that I signed into my gmail. But now I could not sign out of my gmail. I successfully signed out mi cloud account.
Tell me clearly, In redmi how can I sign out of gmail and FB?
Thanks in advance.
Ethan says
Signing out Gmail and removing Gmail is the same. Here’s the guide.

Thanq so much for ur responce and its worked. But after removing the gmail account, it is popping that NEED TO SET BACKUP ACCOUNT. Is it necessary to setup back up account?
Ethan says
If you’re signed in with your Google account, the phone’s settings can be backup to this account and also your Google contacts can be synced with your phone. Whether or not a backup is important, it’s pretty much an individual decision.
Also, in case you’re not aware, you need your Google account to be signed-in in order to download apps from the Google Play.
Personally, I don’t think it makes sense not to sign in your Google account on an Android phone.

Hello Ethan,
This is Nandeep,
Greetings for the day!!
I have redmi 1s mobile and yesterday while I was browsing internet, I changed some settings in Data Usage.
They are
Selected MOBILE DATA USAGE -> SET DATA LIMIT->PEAK DATA LIMIT->Set the limit to 100MB and then saved.
Since that point started problem. After all changes, I again started browsing but there was an error page encountered.
And I have set the DATA LIMIT TO 00 MB and again saved. Even then also Network was not connected and frequently showed the error page.Today also facing the same problem.
How can I resolve the issue? I have 1.5GB data in my account.
thanks a lot in advance.
Ethan says
1. If you’ve exceeded the data limit in the first round of setting, the Mobile data will be disabled automatically. Ensure you re-enable it.
2. By setting the Peak data limit back to 0, it should cancel any limit being set. If it doesn’t, it could be a bug. If that’s the case, you can try report this in the MIUI forum.
3. Can you go to the Security app > Data usage > Restrict to make sure the apps need mobile data usage aren’t being denied. Here’s the guide.
Nandeep says
Hello Ethan,
With my Redmi 1s I can browse faster and everything goes well. After closing the browser, Is it necessary to clear the cache? Or let me know clearing cookies is same as clearing the cache? However I set clear cookies on EXIT in settings of browser.
Also is it enough to use Cleaner in the SECURITY for clearing the all the cookies and cache? And how often we need to use Cleaner in a week?
Awaiting your great reply.
Ethan says
Great day, Nandeep !
1. I’ll only clear cache after I’ve accessed sensitive sites such as online banking site. The benefit of caching is to serve those common sites to you faster when you’re accessing them within certain period.
2. Clearing cache isn’t the same as clearing cookies. You should be able to find plenty of document on this online.
3. Personally, I’ve no recommendation on how frequent you should clean the cache.
