How to use the Data usage feature on your Xiaomi device ?

You can use Xiaomi’s built-in Data usage feature to track your mobile data usage to avoid additional charges on your bill.

How to access the Data Usage feature ?

  1. On your device, find and launch the Security app.
  2. Tap Data usage.

How to create a home screen shortcut for Data usage ?

  1. On the Security app, long tap Data usage, and then tap Create shortcut.

How to set mobile data limit ?

  1. On the Security app, tap Data usage.
  2. Tap xiaomi data usage settings icon , then select Mobile data limit.
  3. Tap Peak data limit to enter your monthly mobile data limit.
  4. Adjust the Data Usage Warning Level slider to set the usage warning level. When the device reaches this level, you will see a usage warning.
  5. Tap Usage cycle reset date to set the date of the month where the data usage is reset to 0.

How to read the Data usage “meter” ?

How to prevent mobile data from turning off automatically when the usage exceeds the data limit ?

The mobile data connection will disable automatically when the usage exceeds the set data limit. If for some reason, you don’t wish your phone to behave in such a manner, follow these steps to turn this feature off :

Note: Additional charges may be incurred if you disable this feature.

  1. On the Security app, tap Data usage.
  2. Tap xiaomi data usage settings icon .
  3. Slide the Restrict peak data usage switch to the left to turn it off.

How to restrict a downloaded app from using mobile data ?

  1. On the Security app, tap Data usage.
  2. Tap Restrict > Downloaded
  3. Find the app you want to restrict the use of mobile data.
  4. Tap the “Allow” button xiaomi data usage allow icon to change to “Disallow” xiaomi data usage disallow_icon in the Data column.

Tip: You can also toggle allow/disallow for Wi-Fi data for downloaded apps.

How to restrict a system (or stock) app from using mobile data ?

  1. On the Security app, tap Data usage.
  2. Tap Restrict > Apps.
  3. Find the app you want to restrict the usage of mobile data.
  4. Tap the “Allow” button xiaomi data usage allow icon to change to “Disallow” xiaomi data usage disallow_icon.

What’s the quickest way to check your daily data usage ?

  1. On the Security app, tap Data usage.
  2. Tap xiaomi data usage settings icon , then ensure you have Show data usage notifications turned on.
  3. Now, you can open the notification panel from the top, then go to the Notifications screen to see today’s data usage, remaining data and monthly limit information.

How to track data usage per app ?

  1. On the Security app, tap Data usage.
  2. Tap Stats to see a list of apps that are sorted by their data usage.
  3. You can select to see the list of either today, yesterday or this month.

Tip: Tap xiaomi data usage sorting_icon to choose to sort the apps by Data usage, Wi-Fi usage or Total usage.

Note: The steps here were written for a Xiaomi device running MIUI V5. If you’re having a different version of MIUI, there’s a possibility that the steps and screenshots will be different.

    I am unable to use moblie data in my redmi note1.But when i was in india there was no problem but r8 now i am in tanzania so i am am only able to use wifi but not mobile data.SO please help

  2. I bought mi4 phone recently. Taken data package of 3g also. Now except whatsapp all other applications are working. Whatsapp is working only by switching on the wifi network. I checked Security -> Data Usage, all applications data and wifi are switched on. Still facing problem with WhatsApp

  4. I have a mi3. The updater app is using up my mobile data even when i’ve restricted it to use my mobile data. I’ve updated my phone to the latest firmware. Still the updater app eats up all my data. Please help.

    I’m with a xiaomi note. I’ve recently got a problem with my mobile data connexion (when I activate, it doesnt work and the little arrows which must blink on status bar doesn’t appear) , whereas all was working perfectly before. Note, that wifi works perfectly. I’ve checked security, All app are allowed. And i’ve already made a reset but no change. 🙁 . Help please

    • Kindly check the Access Point Names (APN) settings in Mobile networks are properly configured. You ask your carrier to help you on this.

  7. I have purchased MI2. Internet browser is not working with data on but all the google apps like google play,google maps etc are working fine. Newly downloaded apps like whatsapp,skype,truecaller doest not detect the data.
    Problem is untraceable. Phone is rebooted many times. Whatsapp is uninstalled 3 times and again reloaded but problem continous.
    Please suggest

    • I don’t have any great suggestions except that making sure the apps that don’t detect data connection have proper permission given to use mobile data in the Data usage module of the Security app.

      Ensure you’ve the latest firmware and seek more advice from the official MIUI forum.

  8. I have note 4g but its not shoshowing Restrict app data option in Security/Data usage to make sure all apps are allow to use mobile data?

    • Update your Redmi Note 4G to the latest firmware. If you still don’t have that, kindly report this issue to the MIUI forum with the screen shot to show that.

  11. I am using redme note 4g and I am having a serious problem . if I am on WiFi then I can use what’s app but using mobile data I can’t use post a single comment , images are far away. I have checked permission there I see only 6 apps are allowed to use data plan where what’s app is not included. Hope if I add what’s app to this list then the problem would resolved, but how I don’t know the way. Please help me to find it out.

  12. hey hii, i have a serious problem on my xiaomi note 4g which i am facing from the first day i have purchased it. initially i was not using a wifi and till then i was able to download apps from google play with an ease from my mobile network but from the day i have started using wifi i am unable to download even apps like hike and whtsapp via my mobile network. it says automatically waiting for a wifi netwrk…i tried to do a reset factory settings still facing the same issue..cn ny1 plese help me regarding this issue…

    • Give the following steps a try:

      1. Open the Download app. Tip: By default, it’s in the Tools folder.
      2. Tap the Menu button > Settings.
      3. Change the Download size limit to Unlimited.
      4. Try downloading any apps from Google Play using the mobile data connection.

    • If you need to access Internet using your mobile connection, yes you need a data plan. Do check with your carrier on this.

  15. I always keep my WiFi on. What I find is even after the phone was connected to WiFi full time in the last 24 hours, 50mb ( my daily limit for mobile data) was deducted and I got a notification. This is strange as I guess if the Mi4i is on WiFi, it should not use mobile data at all no matter what the speed of the WiFi is…isn’t it?

    Is it possible to get the mobile data usage stats for previous months? Vodafone generated a bill for my last month stating and charging for very high mobile data usage. I’m sure it was not used that much. I’m not able to counter their claims.
    Will appreciate a lot any help.

  17. While I can got the meaning of Mobile data limit, can you please elaborate the difference between Mobile data Limit & Set Data Usage.

    • As far as I understood, Set Data Usage lets you manually enter how much data you have used so far for a particular month.

      1. If you enter 500MB, the data usage of the remaining days of the month will be added to 500MB.
      2. If you enter 0, you’ve just reset your data usage to 0.

  18. my mobile data pack is continuously deducting even i have restricted all my apps(+system apps) data use..
    my data pack is also deducting even my mobile in wifi zone…
    how to resolve this problem ?

    • Hi Aman, kindly report your symptom in the MIUI forum. So sorry, I’ve no idea if this a bug or anything else. In the mean time, you might want to disable the mobile data when you’re not using.

      • The phone is pretty good however the MI Music player has some problems!

        Even if there is cover art present in a mp3, the MI music player is unable to display it. I did a comparison of it with Poweramp player. Kindly check the attached screenshots.
        The third screen of music player always shows “Can’t connect to the network.” What is it suppose to do? And if it has some function why is it not working?
        When I play a new song the player auto pause for a fraction of a second.

        Any idea how to resolve these issues?

        • Sorry Aman, whatever you’ve mentioned here were reported by many in the MIUI forum. This is something the MIUI developers have to resolve. Sorry, that I can’t suggest anything better.

  19. uh, my data limit is reading wrong, it says i’ve used the whole 1gb, but when I check the data usage stats, it says I’ve only used 50 MB for the whole month

  22. I set my mobile data limit to 1 GB and for the month, it shows 50MB but on the data usage screen, it shows that I have used 1 GB. How can I rectify this issue. Thanks

    • I don’t know which phone you’re having, I don’t see such an issue on my Mi3, Note 4G and Redmi running the latest firmware. I would suggest you double check to ensure you have set the data limit at the right place in the Peak data limit field.

      If you see 1GB used, you can reset it by entering 0 in Set data usage limit.

  23. My data connection automatically turns on whenever I leave the house. (I don’t usually turn off my wifi and i noticed that whenever there is no wifi connection around me my data turns on by itself.) This seriously pisses me off because i dont have a data plan. I always get charged by my mobile carrier for no reason. Btw i’ve checked that i didnt set any schedule to switch between 2 battery configurations. Is there a fix to this? Thanks.

    • Ensure you’re running the latest firmware. If you’re sure didn’t set any schedule to switch between 2 battery configurations, I guess it’s probably a bug that you want to seek help in the MIUI forum.

      • I did whatever I could. I’m already running on the latest firmware but the problem still persists. I went to my mobile carrier centre to ask and they said it was a phone problem. The only way for me not to get charged is to delete all the APNs from Settings. So even when the data is turned on (it still turns on by itself though), there will be no Internet connection connecting from my mobile carrier. Thanks for your help btw. I appreciate it. 🙂

    • Did you see an error when you enable mobile data ?
      Are all apps not working using mobile data or only certain apps ?
      What other symptoms you see regarding this issue ?

    • Kindly go to the Security app > Data usage > Restrict to make sure you didn’t accidentally block the apps from using mobile data.

  28. Hi! How to reset the data usage manually. ???
    I mean, I have set the “Usage Cycle Reset Date” as 24. And on 25th the counter has not reset itself. And the notification keeps popping a warning message.

    • On the main Data usage screen, tap Set data usage limit and then enter 0 to reset the data used figure.

        I noticed that after resetting the data used figure to zero, it does not start tracking the usage anymore. While the ticker tape shows the daily usage, the remaining data is unchanged. How do I fix that? Thanks.

        • Tested on my Redmi with the latest firmware with no problem. I don’t know which model and firmware you’re having, you can try get the latest firmware for your model and test it again. If the problem still persists, report this error in the MIUI forum.

  30. Why did the contact without +6 will charge extra money when i message to sumone. And even i change the number to +6 ,but sometime still is will go back to +6014 to 14 by using private msg.

  31. What does the display 16K/s, 0.00K/s, 0.18K/s shown at the top right hand corner of the phone means? is it normal, and How to get rid of this display?

    • Data connection speed. You can go to the Settings app > General settings > Notifications and turn off Show connection speed.

    • I can’t confirm whether it’s a bug or anything. But if you tap the Menu button > Settings on the Security app you’ll get the same Settings screen.

  33. Hi..how to prevent my data connection from auto on for my xiaomi redmi note device?it is always auto on everyday at 9.30am even i turned it off earlier..

    • Hmm ..this sounds like it has got something to do with the Power management. Go to the Security app > Power and make sure you didn’t set any schedule to switch between 2 different battery configurations.
