Atahualpa Tutorial Part 1: Installing Atahualpa Theme

October 31, 2011 by Tom

(This is part of the Atahualpa Tutorial for Beginners series)

I use both paid and free WordPress themes for my multiple blogs. This blog is running on the paid theme, whereas my few other niche blogs are running on the free Atahualpa theme.

Well, Atahualpa might sound a bit weird to you at first (Yes, I took quite awhile to memorize the name), but it’s a good theme that comes with many configurable options.

Since I’ve been using the Atahualpa theme for quite awhile and trying out much stuff on this theme, I’m going to write a series of tutorials on how to setup a blog with this theme.

Serving as the first post of the series, I will start off with the topic on how to install the Atahualpa theme. If you’ve had the experience on installing other themes, I guess you can pretty much skip this part.

There are few ways to install a WordPress theme. Here, I will only show you the 2 common methods.  It’s up to you to choose whichever way suits you.

i. Method 1: Installing Atahualpa theme using FTP (A method I used for most of my blogs.)

1. Download the Atahualpa theme Zip file from Atahualpa homepage http://wordpress.bytesforall.com/. Usually the latest post is the latest version of the Atahualpa file. At the time of writing, the latest version is 3.6.7

2. Extract the Atahualpa Zip file. Typically, you will get a directory labelled with the corresponding theme name. For version 3.6.7, the folder name is “atahualpa367”.

3. Connect to your web server using a ftp program and upload the extracted theme folder into the /wp-content/themes/ directory on your server.

I often use FileZilla ftp client.

4. Log-in to your WordPress Dashboard and choose Appearance > Themes. Scroll down to the Available Themes section and click the Activate on Atahualpa theme to use it.

ii. Method 2: Installing Atahualpa theme using the Install Themes option

1. Download the Atahualpa theme Zip file from Atahualpa homepage http://wordpress.bytesforall.com/.

2. Log-in to your WordPress Dashboard and choose Appearance > Themes.

3. Click the Install Themes tab.

4. Click the Upload option. You will see a utility for you to upload a theme Zip file.

5. Click the Choose File button and select the Atahualpa theme Zip on your desktop.

Install Themes Option

6. Click the Install Now button.  WordPress will unzip and install the theme into the right directory for you.

7. Click the Activate option to use the Atahualpa theme.

Installing Theme Activate Option

Again, there are other ways to install a theme on WordPress. But knowing the above 2 options (and choosing one) are good enough to get the job done.

Once you’ve successful installed the Atahualpa theme, browse your site to confirm everything. Below is how the default Atahualpa theme looks like. We will start doing the customization in the next post.
