If you want your Redmi to be extensively unique and are determined to have fun with your Xiaomi phone, then you can start off with the following customization tips.
a. Change the display language
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Go to General settings > Language & input > Language.
- Select the language that you want.
b. Add additional input languages
Whether you’re using Google Keyboard or SwiftKey, additional languages can be added to these keyboards. Here’s how :
i. Google Keyboard
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Go to General settings > Language & input.
- Next, tap the right arrow icon
next to Google Keyboard.
- Tap Input languages.
- Slide the Use system language switch to the left to turn it off. With this feature being turned off, you can turn on as many languages as you want below it.
- On the virtual keyboard, you can tap the
key to switch between the languages.
ii. SwiftKey
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Tap General settings > Language & input.
- Next, tap the right arrow icon
next to Swiftkey.
- Tap Languages.
- On the Languages screen, download and select the languages you want.
c. Turn on/off the keyboard click sound
In case you find it annoying, here’s the guide to disable your Redmi’s keyboard click sound effect. Note: Keyboard click sound is disabled by default.
d. Change the ringtone
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Go to General settings > Sound > Phone ringtone and select the ringtone that you wish to use.
e. Change the notification tone
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Go to General settings > Sound > Default notification and select a tone that you like.
Note: On the same Sound screen, you can also personalize the Messaged received and delivered tones.
f. Turn on/off the dial pad touch tones, touch sounds, screen lock sound and haptic feedback.
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Go to General settings > Sound, and then scroll down to the System section. Here, you can turn the features on/off.
g. Adjust the phone volumes
There are 2 ways to adjust your phone’s volumes :
- Press the physical volume key, located on the right side of your phone, up or down. When a volume icon appears on the screen, tap it to get the sliders for ringtone and media volumes.
- On your phone, go to Settings >General settings > Sound > Volumes and drag the sliders to adjust the volume level for each sound.
h. Change the themes

i. Change the wallpaper for home and lock screens
- On your Redmi home screen, tap the Menu button and then select Wallpaper.
- Depends on your requirement, you can tap either Home screen or Lock screen.
- Next, you can find, download and apply the wallpaper you like. Note: All downloaded wallpapers are listed on the Local tab.
j. Change the display font size
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Go to General settings > Display.
- On the the Display screen, tap Font size and select the right font size for you.
k. Change the screen timeout
You can set the length of idle time before turning off the device screen.
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Tap General settings > Display.
- Tap Sleep and select the duration that you prefer.
l. Change the screen transition effects
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Go to General settings > Display > Preferred launcher > System launcher
- On the Launcher settings screen, tap Screen transition effects and then select the option you want.
m. Change the toggle layout style
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Goto General settings > Notifications.
- At the Toggle Layout Style section, select either Bar or Page. The default setting is Page.
n. Customize the quick setting buttons on the Toggles screen
When you open the notification panel from the top, you should see a list of 11 quick setting buttons. And yes, this list of buttons are customizable. Here’s how:
- On your Redmi, open the notification panel from the top.
- Tap More to get to the Manage toggles screen.
- Now, you can tap and hold
next to the inactive button you want to move and drag it to the “active area” (above the active bar). Note: The 11 buttons in the active area, are the buttons you can see on the Toggles screen.
- You can use the same method: drag and drop to rearrange the buttons in the active area.
o. Lock your device
There are 3 methods: Pattern, PIN and Password to protect your Redmi from unauthorized access. Here’s how you set it:
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Tap Security > Screen security > Screen lock.
- Now, you should see the screen that let you draw an unlock pattern. If you don’t want Pattern lock, tap Try other ways to unlock.
- Here, you can choose either PIN or password.
p. Customize the navigation buttons: Menu, Home, and Back
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Tap General settings > Buttons.
- Here, you can customize the functions you want when long pressing the Menu, Home and Back buttons. You can also define the long press time in second.
q. Change the notification light
- On your phone, find and launch the Settings app.
- Tap General settings > Notification light.
- Here, you can change the notification, call and message light colors.
r. Enable Lite mode

s. Add and remove home screens
On your Redmi, you can add more home screens or delete unnecessary ones easily. Here’s how:
- Firstly, you can place two fingers on any home screen and pinch them together to switch to Edit mode.
- To add a home screen, tap on the
sign after the last or before the first home screen.
- To remove a home screen, simply tap
on the empty home screen.
Note: The steps here were written for Android 4.2.2 on a Redmi (HM1W). If you’re having a different model of Redmi or other version of Android, there’s a possibility that the steps and screenshots will be different.
