You don’t normally add new contacts in WhatsApp directly. You need to add them to the Google or Samsung account that you’ve signed in on your Galaxy phone, to the SIM card or phone storage. The newly added contacts will then sync and appear in your WhatsApp contacts.

Give the above suggestion a try. Once you have added the new contacts, open WhatsApp, go to Contacts tab > Menu button > Refresh to refresh your WhatsApp contacts.

I have added contacts to my SIM card. The newly added contacts does not appear in my WhatsApp contact. I can’t see any Menu button on my contact tab. So I can’t refresh.

Firstly, try updating your WhatsApp to the latest version.

There are some changes in the latest version of WhatsApp. To see the contacts and Refresh button, follow these steps:

1. On the Chats tab, tap the New Chat button in the upper right corner.
2. Here’s a list of your contacts. Tap the 3-dot menu button (in the upper right corner) > Refresh.

Unfortunately on a Galaxy S7 with Whats App installed the screens don’t match this example, and from CHATS the upper right drop down menu shows only
New group
New broadcast
WhatsApp Web
Starred messages
Settings – and in settings there’s no refresh either.

The Refresh option isn’t in the Menu of the Chats tab.

As per the above instructions, tap the ‘New Chat’ button to get to the Select contact screen. Then, tap the Menu button here to see Refresh.

I found a solution for adding a contact in another country to whatsapp, a solution that isn’t listed here and other people might find it useful: when adding the contact to your SIM card or phone (necessary step before refreshing the results on whatsapp), make sure you add the + sign before their country code. If you don’t do that, it will not show up in the whatsapp contacts when you refresh them.
